Does Carbon – 14 dating prove billions of years?

First let’s explain what carbon dating is. Certain atoms called carbon 14 atoms are taken in by all plants and animals. One way animals take in C14 (carbon 14) and C12 (carbon 12) is through eating and breathing. When a plant or animal dies the C14 slowly turns into Nitrogen 14. That means that over time the bones of an animal have less and less C14. Evolutionists know at what rate C14 decays. So they attempt to date bones by calculating how much is left, and how fast C14 decays. But does this prove evolution?

Let’s find out what evolutionists do know. As you see by the diagram below not all three facts are known. Since no one was there to measure the amount of C14 when the animal died, scientists need to find out how much C14 has decayed. To do this, scientists use the main isotope of carbon, carbon-12 (C14). Because C14 is a stable isotope of carbon, it will remain constant; but, the amount of C14 will decrease after an animal dies. So the ratio of C14 to C14 in living animals will be the same as in the atmosphere. This ratio is normally about one C14 atom for every trillion C12 atoms. Scientists use this ratio to help determine the starting amount of C14.

The assumption used in C14 dating has to do with this ratio. Scientists assume that the ratio of C14 to C12 has always been 1 to 1 trillion. If this assumption is true, then C14 dating will work up to about 80,000 years. If this assumption is not true, then the dating method will give wrong dates. If how much C14 is being made in the world is not the same as how much is being removed, then the ratio of C14 to C12 is not 1 to 1 trillion anymore. And that would make the C14 dating method useless.

Before I close I must show how Carbon 14 dating actually seems to help the case of Creation by the God of the Bible. Mr. Ken Ham says in his book The New Answers Book:

“The Production Rate of C-14 is known to be 18.8 atoms per gram of total carbon per minute. The Decay Rate is known to be only 16.1 disintegrations per gram per minute.” What does this mean? If it takes about 30,000 years to reach equilibrium and 14C is still out of equilibrium, then maybe the earth is not very old.”
